Inderpal's story

Experiencing variety and breadth in your day-to-day responsibilities

Having originally joined as an intern, Inderpal works as a Graduate employee within Global Advisory at Rothschild & Co’s London office.

"After completing Rothschild & Co’s Spring Insight Programme and Summer Internship Programme during my time at university, I later joined the firm as a Graduate, working in the Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) team.

Both programmes provided me with a detailed insight and overview of what I would be exposed to when I later joined the firm as a full-time employee.

They were a great introduction to the numerous divisions within the firm, and I was able to experience, first-hand, Rothschild & Co’s culture of looking after their people and putting the client first.

It’s about being unafraid to ask questions…”

The transition from working as an Intern to becoming a full-time Graduate employee is all about gaining as much experience as you can and being unafraid to ask questions.

Everyone is happy to explain anything you’re unsure of, with senior colleagues showing a genuine willingness to invest their time in aiding your development. It’s an important part of the culture at the firm, and makes you feel valued and respected from day one.

In turn, when we then hire new Graduates or are working alongside Interns, you strive to treat them the same way, enabling the supportive and inclusive culture the firm has fostered over the years to trickle down naturally.

Plenty of great training opportunities…”

There have been plenty of great training opportunities, both since joining as part of the Spring Insight Programme and even now, after working here for a few years.

Managers regularly encourage you to refine and expand your skillset regardless of your level of experience or seniority within the firm, with specialist training programmes at each level you reach.

We also have opportunities to take part in training sessions externally, where you spend three to four days meeting and training alongside peers within the firm who, ordinarily, you wouldn’t spend time with outside of business.

There’s a lot of variety to the work…”

One interesting aspect of the team I work in – TMT – is that it spans multiple sectors across a variety of industries.

For example, I’ve worked on a variety of deals ranging from helping to sell a Belgian telecom company who own cable in the ground, to working on initial public offerings (IPOs) for businesses who sell software to hairdressers.

TMT can encompass so many different sectors, within which there are a huge number of subsectors. As a result, there’s a lot of variety to the work, and you’re always being exposed to and learning something new."
