Our history in India
The Rothschild businesses played an instrumental role in the financing of railways worldwide in the nineteenth century, including large parts of India’s railway network. Between 1881 and 1887 the London house issued Indian Railway shares totalling £6.4m for companies and projects across the country totalling c.1,500 miles of track, including the creation of the first coast-to-coast connection between Kolkata and Mumbai.
