Zach's story

Establishing career interests through experience

After working as an Investment Banker in our Global Advisory business for five years, Zach is now a Principal in our Five Arrows Direct Lending team in Paris, and has marked his eight years with Rothschild & Co.

“I joined Rothschild & Co in 2016 following the completion of my Master's Degree in Management and Corporate Finance, and undertaking internships within the finance sector. I was keen to join Rothschild & Co because of the brand’s reputation and the feedback I had from people working in the industry.

I also knew that as an Investment Banker in Global Advisory in Paris, you can try a lot of different things, and are not constrained in terms of products, geographies and sectors, which was ideal for me while I figured out what I wanted to specialise in. During my analyst cycle, I had the opportunity to provide advisory services in M&A, financing (including debt, equity and restructuring), and work on some sovereign advisory projects.

The transition between Global Advisory and Five Arrows was smooth"

In 2021, I had the opportunity to move to our Five Arrows business. The possibility of working on the buyside as a debt investor was of particular interest to me, effectively giving me the opportunity to be making investment decisions (or recommendations) rather than advising on them. The transition was smooth, and both teams were supportive and happy that I was able to evolve within the Group.

In my current role, I spend about 80-90 per cent of my time looking at investment opportunities. I take part in all steps of the process from due diligence and internal analysis, to modelling, documentation, the legal discussions as well as the closing. The rest of my time is spent on portfolio management and monitoring.

You are not just a number here"

At Rothschild & Co, the learning curve is incredible - for several reasons. One is that you work with people who are talented. If you want something here, and go out of your comfort zone, colleagues at all levels will gladly support and encourage you. There is also a focus on the well-being of the teams, making sure that you are progressing and that everything is going well. It might be a cliché, but you are not just a number.

My advice for new joiners is that it’s very important to stay in touch with the peers you meet at the various training sessions from across other offices or other divisions, as it makes working together a lot easier.”
